A SHILLING FOR THE GAS

                   ...young men, whom Aristotle thought

                   Unfit to hear moral philosophy.

 In memory of Axel Stern

At fourteen I heard Driesch defend free will;

I became a determinist. But not for good,

so I can say now: ‘and by choice’.

Stars jingling in the frost,

we discuss the choice of life.

‘There was something Axel said—’

Well, and morality, is that just given?

A meaningful morality is created.

And conscience chewing the rag,

the mind in its maze, the feelings'

me, myself, and I?

Yet, a creative ethics (remember this!)

is the ideal to which all moral discussion

is only an asymptote.

Youth is a kitchen supper;

shall we discuss a pie?
